Volunteers' Week: Meet Sarah
From the 2nd to the 6th of June, we're joining #VolunteersWeek2025 which means across our online platforms we're celebrating our volunteers and all they do helping us support refugees and people seeking safety in Devon - in all honesty, we couldn't do it without them!
We’ve interviewed a handful of our volunteers from across a range of projects at Refugee Support Devon. They’ve shared their background, what motivates them to volunteer and why others should too!
Meet Sarah.
Sarah has been a volunteer with Refugee Support Devon for nearly 2 years and is a volunteer English language teacher.
Q: Tell us your story. Why do you volunteer and choose to give your time to Refugee Support Devon?
I am a volunteer English language teacher. I started volunteering with Refugee Support Devon because I wanted to make asylum seekers and refugees feel welcome in Devon. I didn’t like the news coverage and felt it was a practical thing I could do to help. I have continued doing it because I have met so many inspiring and interesting people from lots of different countries.
Q: What’s your favourite part about volunteering with us?
Learning about traditions and sayings in the clients’ home countries and languages.
Q: In your words, why is Refugee Support Devon’s work so important?
We give practical help to asylum seekers and refugees, as well as friendly faces to talk to.
Q: What’s your message to refugees and people seeking asylum in Devon?
You are welcome here.
Q: In your opinion, why should people volunteer?
You can learn so much from it!
