Introducing Exeter’s New Multilingual Choir!

Refugee Support Devon is thrilled to announce the launch of a brand-new multilingual choir, facilitated by Valentina, our talented Drop-in and Safe Spaces Coordinator.

This exciting initiative, created in collaboration with Devon County Council, takes place every Friday afternoon from 1–3 PM at St Sidwell’s Community Centre, during term time.

The choir is free to attend and welcomes everyone to join in a celebration of music, dance, and cultural exchange. Each week, Valentina facilitates the group in exploring songs from around the world, creating a fun space where guests can share and learn about each other's musical traditions.

Valentina explained how the Choir came into existence:

“We set up the choir with the help of Devon County Council, and the thought behind it was to have an inviting space where people could come and do music together, feel safe, and really enjoy what they are doing.”

Eddie, another RSD staff member went to one of the sessions and said this:

I was shocked by how happy it made me, watching such a diverse group of people come together and sing so well. It was genuinely amazing to see how impactful simple songs can be in such a supportive environment.”

There is an overwhelming collaborative spirit at the choir, with members sharing ideas about the songs and stories of their cultures. Some of the songs even include dance moves to add some flair to the group!

Valentina added this about why people enjoy the choir, “A few people have already mentioned that being in the choir has given them the opportunity to do something different that takes their mind off every day issues, big or small.”

Martina, an attendee, added to this by saying “I joined the first session because I was searching, first of all to sing, because I love singing, as you could see probably! The second, I wanted to meet new people, because I moved here in July, so I want to create a new circle of friends and social life.”

Martina continued by adding “I think that’s why I joined this choir and I love it because there are people from all over the world, so that’s the beauty.”

In their first few sessions, the group embraced the sounds of traditional English folk songs. We cannot wait to see where Valentina takes them next!

Whether you are a seasoned singer or just love the idea of meeting others through music, you’re warmly invited to join us. Reserve your spot by emailing multiexeterchoir@gmail.com, or feel free to drop by and join the fun!

Come and be part of this fantastic celebration of community, culture, and song.
