10 March update: the highest bid so far is £350

We’ve been presented with a unique and exciting opportunity to auction a lovely and colourful abstract painting, Walk on the Wild Side, by Devon-based artist and RSD supporter Phil Smith. All proceeds from the sale of the painting will go to Refugee Support Devon.

The painting measures 51cm by 66cm and would command an asking price of over £1000 on the open market. This will be a silent auction - to place a bid for the painting, all you have to do is email info@refugeesupportdevon.org.uk  with your name and bid amount (minimum £50 please) by 5pm on Friday, 10 March. Please call us on 01392 682185 if you have any queries. We will update this web-page with news about the highest bid from Monday, 6 March - Friday, 10 March. The abstract will go to the highest bidder and all proceeds will go to Refugee Support Devon. The successful bidder will have to pick up the abstract from our office in Exeter.

This is a truly wonderful gesture by Phil in support of our work, so please get bidding and share with any art lovers you know.

About the artist

Phil Smith is an abstract artist based in Crediton, Devon. His work sells internationally through online galleries. After a long career in estuarine and marine biology Phil decided to concentrate on painting, drawing on themes such as the marine environment, what he has seen under the microscope and inspiration from his international travels. He has been a supporter of RSD for several years and decided this year to also offer his Walk on the Wild Side abstract to RSD to auction. The title of the painting is from the Lou Reed song that Phil was listening to whilst completing the painting, but is also apt for refugees, who daily have to ‘Walk on the Wild Side’.

Phil says ‘I cannot imagine the trauma that refugees face when leaving their homes, extended family and friends and starting life in a new country. I am full of admiration for them and charities like RSD that help them.’
